All American video poker is very similar to your standard Jacks or Better. It's played with a standard 52 card deck and you are dealt 5 cards of which you can hold as many as you want or replace with as many new cards from the deck.

The only differences between All American and Jacks or Better are in the pay out tables. I've highlighted below where All American differs compared to the standard Jacks or Better pay outs: (J/B = Jacks or Better)

Royal Flush - The Same
Straight Flush - Higher 90 compared to J/B 50
Four of Kind - Higher 35 compared to J/B 25
Full House - Lower 8 compared to J/B 25 9
Flush - Higher 8 compared to J/B 6
Straight - Higher 8 compared to J/B 4
3 of a Kind - The Same
Two Pair - Lower 1 compared to J/B 2
1 pair - The Same

All American video poker has never been quite as popular as some might have expected even though it offers a payback over 100% if played with perfect play.

One thing that was noted about the standard Jacks or Better was that its pay outs did not correspond with the hands frequency of occurrence with good strategic play. The payouts for full house, flush and straight were 9, 6 and 4 -1, yet the occurrences or these hands was much closer than these payouts suggest. This is the key area that All American differed and actually made the payouts for these three hands the same at 8 -1.

The higher pay outs for the straight flush and four of a kind combined with the overall increase in payouts for the 8 -1 hands more than make up for the lesser payout of Two Pair.

All American Video Poker Strategy Tips:

The first mistake many players make is to use Jacks or Better strategy because the game play is the same. However with the payout tables so different this is a big mistake and reducing payback to well below 100%..

With the Straight Flush and Four of a Kind paying higher your strategy should be geared a little more to hitting these hands.

Don't break up a paying hand unless you only need 1 card to complete a Royal Flush.

Non paying hands you should hold:
4 cards to a royal flush
4 cards to a straight flush
3 cards to a royal flush
4 cards to a flush
Any pair under a Jack
4 cards to an outside straight
2 suited high cards
3 cards to a straight flush
2 unsuited high cards (if more than 2 choose the 2 lower ones).
Suited high cards 10-J, 10-Q, 10-K
A card Jack or better.
